Summer naturally means we’re spending more time outdoors, enjoying the longer nights and warmer temperatures. But the hotter months do bring some difficulties for pup parents, especially when considering their dogs’ comfort and health.
So, what should you be doing during summer to ensure your dog has everything they need? Can they still exercise? What about sunburn?
At The Dog Dazzlers, we’re experts in canine care and have spent many summers enjoying the company of our furry friends. So, trust us when we say we really do know all the best tips for keeping dogs cool in summer.
7 Tips for Keeping Dogs Cool in Summer
There are lots of little things you can do throughout the summer months to ensure your pooch is well cared for and happy. Some of them might include buying a useful pup product and others are just changing your usual daily routine.
Tip #1: Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Throughout the year, it’s really important to always make sure your pooch has access to fresh water. Not only does water help to keep pups hydrated, but it’s also a great way to cool them down. When you’re at home, you could try putting some ice cubes in your dog’s water bowl to keep it extra cold or even try making your own pupsicles using dog-safe fruits. They’re a great way to keep your dog stimulated and hydrated!
When out on walks, ensure you bring even more water than usual so your pup can take plenty of breaks to cool down.
Tip #2: Give Them a Cool Surface
Did you know that dogs can’t sweat through their skin like humans do? They release excess body heat through panting and through their paw pads and noses. This means it’s extra important during the summer months to give them somewhere cool to relax.
There are loads of great cooling mats out there that dogs can put their little paws on to help them cool down. Some of them are made from reactive gel that turns cool with your dog’s weight and others will need to be put in the fridge. There are also many practical elevated beds that naturally keep your pooch cool.
Tip #3: Change Up Your Routine
We know, dogs don’t always love having their routines changed but it is important – especially through the summer months. Try to take your dogs out for walks during the coolest part of the day (i.e. very early in the morning or late at night). Keep them in the shade or indoors during the hottest parts of the day and, as we mentioned, give them more water than usual.
It’s also important to think about your dog’s little paws. Although hardy, paw pads can still be sensitive and very hot pavements can easily burn them. Avoid pavements where possible or even think about getting your pooch some protective footwear.
Tip #4: Sun and Sea Protection
If you’re thinking about spending a day at the beach or pool with your dog, it’s really important to make sure they’re well protected. Dogs with short or finer coats are more likely to get sunburnt than dogs with thick coats. As well as providing them with plenty of shade and minimising their time in the sun, you may also want to get some dog sunscreen for extra protection.
Many dogs love swimming, and whilst it can be an excellent way for them to cool down and burn off some steam, you need to make sure they’re safe when doing it. Never leave a pup unsupervised in water and it might be a good idea to get smaller dogs a swimming vest. Some dogs, such as Bulldogs and Basset Hounds, may be at extra risk in water, and it’s best just to let them wet their toes rather than go for a proper swim.
Tip #5: Be Considerate of Your Dog’s Breed
Some breeds find cooling down harder than others. Brachycephalic breeds, such as Pugs, find it difficult to pant after exercise or in hot weather. It’s best just to take these dogs for a gentle walk early in the morning and keep them stimulated indoors with puzzle toys and healthy treats.
Likewise, dogs with big fluffy coats will find it hard to get comfortable in the heat. Give them extra water and cooling mats and treats such as frozen fruit. You may also need to consider some extra dog grooming during the summer months.
Tip #6: Parasite Prevention
With the summer months come all kinds of pests and parasites which can be a real nuisance, or even dangerous, for dogs and their owners. Not only do you need to keep dogs safe from snakes, but it’s also important to keep them up to date with their flea, tick, and worm treatments. As any pup parent will tell you, preventing a parasite infestation is always better than treating one.
Tip #7: Take Them to Doggy Daycare
If you’re worried about keeping your dog at home during the warmer months, you might want to consider bringing them to doggy daycare at The Dog Dazzlers.
